rich historical fiction and wonderfully flawed main characters

Can't tell why I liked this book so much. Maybe because I was aware just how much of it was true. Maybe it's that I could keep looking up things I was reading, finding endless streams of information about anything in the book... like encountering a fan wiki when reading good scifi. I suppose an historical fiction fan already knows all this. Or maybe it was just a good story regardless of supplemental material. I think both. Anyways, thanks to all the history deep-diving this book inspired, I now know way more than I ever expected to about English history and European Christian divides!
12% in: loving this so far. Learning a ton about English history, spurred by research about the background events referenced here. Spicy times in England!
