Four Reigns

Spanning decades of upheaval, Four Reigns follows the life of Phloi, a woman raised within the palace world who must navigate a society transforming around her. From the late nineteenth century to the aftermath of World War II, her personal journey unfolds alongside the fall of absolute monarchy, the rise of constitutional rule, and Thailand's encounter with global forces. Through Phlois family-her loves, losses, and shifting loyalties— the novel brings history down to a human scale. Court life, social hierarchy, and tradition gradually give way to uncertainty, modernity, and political change. The result is not just a chronicle of events, but an intimate portrait of how individuals experience history as it happens. First serialized in 1953, Four Reigns remains one of Thailand's most beloved novels. For contemporary global readers, it offers a rare window into a pivotal era— where personal lives are inseparable from the sweeping transformations of a nation finding its place in the modern world.
