The intrigue intensifies

Jude continues her machinations to ensure the future of Faerie.

I enjoyed this less than the first book in the series. I suppose there was more political intrigue, but it all felt a little tedious. The “romance” fizzled completely for me. I suppose it’s to be seen as a slow burn, but they should both cut their losses and move on, seriously. Betrayal, turn-around, comeuppances, it’s all in here, but I’m just not invested enough to actually care very much. Only one book left, so will finish the series.

Great writing of relationships

First of all, I don't remember a single page in this book that felt like I just wanted to skim it to get to the good part. The entire book is the good part, and it doesn't get boring.

Second, I love the way Holly Black writes relationships. They're the "can't trust anyone" kind of relationships, while still seeming natural and realistic. Probably because all characters have their own personality and backstory - most don't feel like they're just there as a plot point (with one exception, but that would require a spoiler warning)
