Plot and flashbacks, weak character arcs

Technically this is the 4th book in the “Shades of Magic” series, it picks up 7 years after the previous adventure. Not labeling it as such will confuse new readers.

Unfortunately, at every turn the book goes for plot over character development, which results in a lot of things happening for no reason. And the constant flashbacks! It was a poor device used here. A more chronological flow would have helped and provided some much needed character development. Also, for no reason, Lila is even worse. In the end this felt overly long and unsatisfying. I really wanted to like the book but it doesn’t hold up to the previous ones.
